Hi all! I wanted to share with you how to start your own website or blog. I get this question asked a lot. The thought of starting your own sounds pretty scary if you are not tech savvy but this tutorial will make it easy and simple so you can start immediately.
Follow my easy step by step tutorial below so you can start blogging today.
Please Note: this tutorial is on how to start a brand new blog. If you are interested in moving your blog (blogger.com or wordpress.com) over to a self-hosted WordPress.org blog please visit SiteGround hosting. They will migrate your site over for you for free, with the purchase of certain hosting plans. Contact them for further details.
Step 1. Choose a Domain Name
The first step is to think of a domain name you would like to use. If you already have a domain name then skip this step. If you need a domain name then get out your handy dandy notebook. Write down at least four or five names in case the first one you choose is not available. Try to keep your domain name short and simple. This will make it easy for your visitors to find you and type it in.
Step 2. Choose Your Hosting Provider
For this tutorial I’m going to use Bluehost. This is the hosting service we use here at Studio Mommy. They offer exceptional customer service and will help you get your site started if you get stuck.
Step 3. Choose Your Hosting Plan
Go to bluehost.com, click on “Get Started Now”, then choose your hosting plan. If you are starting a new blog for the first time then it’s okay to choose the Basic Plan. It’s totally up to you though. You can always upgrade later to a bigger plan when you need to. Bluehost will help you do that.
Step 4. Add your Domain Name to your Hosting Plan
If you need a domain then refer back to the list of names you chose in Step 1. Add your first choice domain name to the box that says “New Domain”. It will let you know if it’s available.
If you already have a domain name you can move it over to Bluehost. To do this fill in the box that says “Transfer Domain”.
Step 5. Fill Out Personal Information and Checkout
Now you will need to fill out the personal information and choose the length of time you would like to use Bluehost services. The longer the amount of time the lower the subscription price. The last step on this screen is your billing information.
Step 6. Install WordPress
After step 4 is finished and submitted you now have a Bluehost account. Awesome right? Now we need to add WordPress to your Bluehost account.
Log into your Bluehost account, if you are not already there then click on “Install WordPress” (see image below).
Next click on “Start” a brand new install. Then choose your domain from the drop down menu. Click on “Check Domain”.
Step 7. Almost There
When you see the “You are almost there!” Screen click on “Show Advanced Options” so that you can add your blog title and create your username/password.
Make sure the box is checked that says “Automatically create a new database for this installation”.
Read the terms and conditions then click “Install Now”. It will take a little bit of time for Bluehost to create your blog but only a minute or two.
Step 8. Wah-la, you’re site should be up and running now!!!
Bluehost will email your username/password along with links to your blog. You can log into your WordPress blog by typing this into your web browser yourdomain.com/wp-admin/
Step 9. Make Your Site Pretty
Now you can dress up your site by choosing one of Studio Mommy’s themes. This is probably the hard part, picking which theme you want to use 🙂
- Blog Themes – these themes are more blog based if you only want to blog.
- Premium Themes – these themes are more website based if you need a website design and you can also add a blog to these themes too.
