There are many newsletter subscription services out there to choose from. One of the most popular services is MailChimp. I personally use MailChimp on Studio Mommy and love all the extra features it offers to help grow my business!
This tutorial is going to show you how to connect MailChimp with the Genesis eNews Extended widget. If you purchased one of Studio Mommy’s WordPress themes and use MailChimp (or plan to) please follow this tutorial.
Step 1 – Create MailChimp Account
Create an account with MailChimp if you haven’t already. MailChimp is free up to 2000 subscribers! This is great for those who are just getting started.
After you follow the steps to create an account on MailChimp… MailChimp will send you an email to Activate your account.
Step 2 – Create Your First List
After you are done creating and activating your account… the next step is to create a List. MailChimp allows you to create multiple lists. Lists are a batch of emails collected from your visitor signups. You can create a main list where everyone can sign up to receive your newsletters. Plus you can create other lists for visitors who only want to receiver your food recipes, your freebies, your tutorials, or more.
After you are logged into your MailChimp account then click on the button that says “Create List“.
Next you will see a box that says “New Lists or Groups”… click on “Create List” again.
On the next screen it will ask you some information about your list, that you are creating. You will see your address listed and may be wondering if your address will be shown to your visitors? The answer is Yes. This is so you and MailChimp are in compliance with the CAN-SPAM Act. You can read more about this here.
Although you can use your home address, I highly do not recommend it. Another option would be to rent a P.O. Box instead.
Step 3 – Get the Embedded Code
After you save your list… the next step is to get the embed code so we can connect your list to your site. Click on the “List” tab then click on your list.
From here click on “Signup Forms” then click on “Select” for Embedded Forms.
Next, click on “Naked” then copy the signup form code provided.
You will need to paste this code into a Notepad (if using a PC) or TextEdit (if using a Mac). We only need to get a small section of this code. Look for the Form Action code and only copy the section that is in bold (in between the first set of parentheses).
Step 4 – Setup the Genesis eNews Extended Widget
If you haven’t done so yet please upload and activate the Genesis eNews Extended plugin to your site. Next, go to “Appearance” then “Widgets”. Then add the Genesis eNews Extended widget to the widget section of your choice (like the Primary Sidebar or view your themes tutorial for widget placement).
Step 5 – Last Step / Test It
After you save the changes you made to the widget… it’s time to test it. Go to your websites, fill out the subscription form, and see if it works.
If you are having any trouble, just let me know.
