What I Learned about Twitter the Hard Way
Every social media site is great for different reasons. Facebook is awesome for it’s more personal touch and Pinterest is awesome for letting people get a good feel of what you like. One of the reasons I love using Twitter is for it’s simple and straight forward approach. The only thing is, I don’t use it nearly enough.
Usually you will only see tweets from me when there is a new post but that’s automated through my RSS Feedburner or when I tweet something for one of my sponsors. I got stuck in a rut with Twitter. My biggest problems were:
- I can’t follow anyone back π *heavy sigh* I’ll explain in just a bit why.
- When is the best time to tweet? At what time of the day will be most productive for my tweets? I don’t really know when people are most active on twitter.
- I just can’t find the time to tweet as often as I would like or should. This is a common problem amongst a lot of people.
When I first started my twitter account I thought it would be a great idea to follow as many people as I could and then in return, they would follow me back. When I did this two things happened. (1) I received a message from Twitter saying I needed to stop what I was doing or they would close my account. Reason being is that they thought I was a spammer. (2) There is a ratio on Following to Followers. Over time I was following more people then they were following me (see picture below). Again, twitter thought I may be a spammer so my account is frozen at 2,000 people and I can’t follow anyone else.
I find so many blogs or business that I want to follow on Twitter but I can’t and it stinks big time. I have been patiently waiting for my number in followers to increase so I can start following again. That is until now. There is a site called ManageFlitter that allows you to simply find people that you may not want to follow and remove them from your account. Yes, I could do this on my own but I’m following 2,000 people and that is a lot of people to search through and find the ones I don’t want to follow. ManageFlitter is free and made it very simple to eliminate those:
- who are not following me back
- who are no longer using Twitter
- who do not have a profile picture (red flag that the account may not be a real person)
When I first saw this list it made me kind of sad to see who isn’t following me back but then I quickly realized that my numbers in followings are very valuable. My mindset was “out with the old and in with the new”. I wanted to find like-minded people who would follow me back. You can see in the image below how many people were not following me back. When you are ready to remove those people just simply click and drag the ones you want to remove by clicking on the “quick edit” button.
There is another service called TweetAdder and this one you pay for but it’s a great service for those who don’t want to spend the manual time removing those said above. It’s totally up to you rather you want to spend the manual time or pay to have someone do it for you (it will save you lots of time).

I know this is a pretty old post, but you can contact Twitter Support and talk to them about following more than 2000 people. π Just a tip. I had to do it in order to get over 100 because they had marked me as spam after I followed 50 people in one day. Talking to them and sorting it out helps. π
